A comprehensive site for learning about adding a dog to the household.

Whether you shop or adopt - do it ethically.

You can either check out the Menu pages in the upper right of the screen or read further for help on just how to do so!

  • Find the Right Fit

    • Make a list of what you’re looking for.

    • Be honest with yourself!

      • This isn’t a list of what you hope your dog will help you do (like get more active), this is a list of what kind of dog would fit in with your current life.

Or more help on determining your best fit, go to the Find Your Best Fit page.

  • Adopt or Shop?

    • Neither is wrong!

    • If you have a low budget or a heart for rescue, then adoption might be the right choice.

    • If you want to do a certain sport or activity, then a purpose-bred dog might be the right choice.

    • Don’t be in a rush! Finding the right choice may take time.

For more information on adopting, go to the Rescues page.

For more information on purchasing, go the Breeders page.

  • Go Ethical

    • Look for rescues and breeders that have the interest of the dog in mind.

    • Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to turn away if things don’t seem right.

    • Unfortunately, not all rescues are ethically run, so ask questions and support your ethical rescues!

    • Unfortunately, purebred does not always mean well bred. Ask questions and support your reputable breeders!

  • Introduce Your Pup

    • New puppies tend to take 5-7 days to adjust to a new household.

    • Older puppies and dogs can take up to 3 months.

    • Take your time with your new addition and be patient.

    • It’s fun to show them off but go at a slow pace to avoid overwhelming them.

    • Starting off with a good foundation will help with training and trust.

  • Training!

    • Set your pup up for success by creating clear boundaries right away.

    • Spend time with them, but also allow them time on their own. This will help to avoid separation anxiety.

    • Expose them to new sights, sounds, smells, textures and more in a safe manner.

    • Teach them how to be neutral with things in their environment and engage with you instead.

    • Teach them impulse control and build commands.

For more information on getting started, check out the Training page.

  • Maintenance

    • You lose what you don’t use!

    • Continue to practice good habits, work in new environments, and be consistent.

    • Spread the good word!

      • Teach others about how to pick the best fit and build communication with their dog.
